Smashingly Good Bet

So Dave did a roundup of our favorite variations on the best theme ever: Super Smash Bros. Melee. I don’t really have any variations to add, but I thought I’d share the one-on-one betting system that Nick and I developed.

You can play any mode, but Nick and I found our favorite to be Stamina for one-on-one matches. You must have unlocked all the characters so that you can pick randomly (by dropping in the two empty side corners). The betting follows normal poker rules (raise until done, fold at any time, etc.).

  1. Ante up. Pick one of you to be the leader (the person that will be betting first this round). Rotate leader status after each pot.
  2. Both pick random characters. We chose to play without names turned on out of the fear that they would affect the randomness.
  3. Do a first round of betting.
  4. The leader picks the stage.
  5. After the first game, there is another round of betting. But in order to meet the loser’s bets, the winner must pay double.
  6. Using the same characters, the non-leader picks the stage for the second game.
  7. If the same person wins, they get the pot. Else there is a final round of betting with equal weight for the raises.
  8. Pick the last stage randomly, same characters.
  9. Whoever wins the third, final game wins the pot. Congrats!
