Here are some sites I am always pleased as punch to see pop up in my RSS reader:
-
Girls Are Pretty — A new holiday every day just for you. And no, I don’t know why the site’s called Girls Are Pretty, though they do tend to be. Updated daily.
-
A Softer World — Clever, dark captions. Updated Fridays. Each comic has a mouse-over comment.
-
Dinosaur Comics — Using the same comic template, Ryan changes the dialog each time to something equally hilarious. Updated daily. There are three ‘hidden’ comments for each comic — the mouse-over, the default subject in the ‘comment’ link for the day, and the title of the comic (only displayed in the RSS feed?).

And last but not least, Achewood. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Chris Onstad should be Poet Laureate. Achewood may be hard to get into at first, as it is pretty character-based. I’d recommend starting at the beginning. But if you want a quick survey of some favorites, you’ve got it:
- Oooh, these knives!
- Bone bone bone
- Can Todd read?
- I am sorry about this Roast Beef.
- Roast Beef’s personal ad
- Dainty little ovaries
- Roast Beef’s shirt problems (one and two)
- Everybody dance like there’s ass in your pants!
- How would I know that that robot don’t ejaculate?
- The dude owns property.
- Asleep style
- What’s the verdict on wooden nickels?
- I just got weirded out
- Talking like dogs
- Debonair SysAdmin
- Bible fan fic
- A Boring place
- Rap music my droogs!
- Phillipe’s sense of subversity
- Milk, old school style
- Nothing else I could say would make more sense
One great bonus about Achewood is that Chris maintains blogs for each of the principle characters. They complement the main comic well. The comic is updated mostly daily. The blogs whenever. Each comic has a mouse-over comment.
I definitely would NOT recommend starting at the beginning of Achewood. I think a better place to start is where Ray and Roast Beef are introduced. It felt kind of empty before then.
Which I think is this strip. Achewood had some funny before Ray and Roast Beef, but I agree that they made the strip way better.
Achewood fun fact: It looks like Chris didn’t start using mouse-over comments until the beginning of 2002.
